History

Prior to founding Hutner Capital Management in 1995, Daniel E. Hutner was president of Pulsifer & Hutner, Inc., a Wall Street investment adviser founded in 1925. He holds a B.A. in economics from Middlebury College, an M.A. in English from University of Virginia, and an M.B.A. from New York University.

Mr. Hutner grew up in a household where business and investments were common dinner conversation. The son of two PhDs in economics, he has a clear and instinctive understanding of the economy and its relationship to business and investment success. In addition to managing assets for more than 30 years, his professional experience includes econometric research and economic and energy consulting for groups like the Joint Economic Committee of Congress.

Additionally, Mr. Hutner has written for the Smithsonian Institution, the National Geographic Society, and was a contributor to Better Investing magazine, the official publication of the National Association of Investors Corporation (NAIC).

Mr. Hutner serves as President of Hutner Capital Management, and General Partner of the Hutner High Income Fund, L.P., the Hutner Special Situations Fund, L.P., and Avalon Partners, L.P., an investment fund that applies the principles of a book he wrote on investing, titled The Rational Investor.

Daniel E. Hutner, Jr., the first of the third generation in the family business, joined the firm in 2006. Mr. Hutner, Jr. has also grown up in the business, dating back to early work on research and special projects in high school. He holds a B.A. in economics, with honors, from Middlebury College where, among other things, he analyzed the microeconomics of local businesses, advising them on competitive strategy, and wrote a thesis on the shadow banking system in China using agent-based modeling. He holds a Series 65 Uniform Investment Adviser license, has passed the CFA Exam Level I & II, and is a CFA Exam Level III Candidate. He also speaks Spanish, German, and Mandarin Chinese. Daniel E. Hutner, Jr. serves as Vice President & Chief Compliance Officer at Hutner Capital Management.
